In the Roman theatre at Baelo Claudia two main phases of construction have been identified, both susceptible of different interpretations. The first belongs to the 6th decade of the 1st century CE; the second, to the beginning of the Flavian period. Both were part of a major renovation programme intended to transform the appearance of the town’s public spaces during the second half of the 1st century.

The monuments on Delos and in Athens celebrating the pancratiast and wrestler Menodoros son of Gnaios are analysed together, beginning with a reconstruction of their bases and of the statue-group that stood on the Delian monument; there follows a revised version of the text of the inscriptions (ID 1957 and 2498 at Delos, Agora XVIII, C196 / IG II/III 3 , 4.1, 599, at Athens), combined with a study of the wreaths which constitute the athlete's record of victories. Prosopographical considerations favour dating the two monuments to the decade 120-110, and the Athenian monument then confirms the dating to that period, obtained by separate criteria, of Attic and Rhodian inscriptions. Finally, the place of the monuments in the history of athletic contests and their topographical surroundings is discussed. These varied approaches result in conclusions which are historically and archaeologically consistent.

περίληψη Δημοσίευση μιας ανέκδοτης επιγραφής πού βρέθηκε στό θέατρο της Δήλου καί ερμηνεύεται σάν διπλή συντομογραφία : Hosp(Halis) Ray(mundus). Ή μελέτη των πηγών πού αναφέρουν τους «Ίωαννϊτες» στή Δήλο επιτρέπει νά δεχθούμε τήν παρουσία τους στό νησί άπό τό 1326 : εγκαταστάθηκαν μετά άπό προτροπή τών δουκών τής Νάξου γιά νά καταπολεμήσουν τήν πειρατεία καί εγκατέλειψαν τό νησί στίς αρχές του 15ου αιώνα. Résumé Publication d'une inscription inédite trouvée au théâtre de Délos, interprétée comme une double abréviation : Hosp(italis) Ray(mundus). L'examen des sources mentionnant le séjour des Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean à Délos conduit à suggérer qu'ils étaient présents dans l'île dès 1326 : ils vinrent s'y installer à l'instigation des ducs de Naxos pour lutter contre la piraterie et l'avaient quittée au début du xve siècle.

Je propose d'y reconnaître la vignette du traité conclu au lendemain de la guerre du Péloponnèse entre Thasos et Néapolis sous la protection de Delphes et Paros, déjà connu par un exemplaire trouvé à Paros (IG XII 5, 109). Les quatre divinités représentées seraient Zeus, Apollon, Parthénos et Héraclès. περίληψη Κατά τή διάρκεια της αποκάλυψης του ξυστού τών Δελφών, τό 1985, βρέθηκε ή επικεφαλίδα μιας συνθήκης, ακρωτηριασμένης καί μερικά άποξυμένης, πού διατήρησε μόνο τόν τίτλο της. Προτείνω νά αναγνωρισθεί ή κορωνίδα της συνθήκης πού συνομολόγησαν ή Θάσος καί ή Νεάπολη τήν έπαύριο του Πελοποννησιακού πολέμου μέ τήν προστασία τών Δελφών καί τής Πάρου · ήταν ήδη γνωστή άπό ένα αντίτυπο πού εϊχε βρεθεί στην Πάρο (IG XII 5, 109). It is agreed that the gymnasion mentioned in accounts, inventories and decrees found at Delos should be identified with the gymnasium that is located close to the Stadium, in the northeastern part of the island. This building, built in ca. 100 BC, cannot be identified with the gymnasion attested from the 3rd c. BC in inscriptions. The latter must be understood as being the Palestra by the lake, where a decree was discovered in situ specifying that the stèle was to be erected «in the gymnasium of Delos». Résumé On s'accorde à identifier le gymnasion mentionné dans des comptes, dans des inventaires et dans des décrets trouvés à Délos avec le gymnase qui est situé à proximité du Stade, dans la partie Nord-Est de l'île. Cet édifice, construit aux environs de 100 av. J.-C, ne peut être identifié avec le gymnasion attesté dès le IIIe s. av. J.-C. par les inscriptions. Ce dernier doit être reconnu dans la Palestre du lac, où fut découvert, in situ, un décret stipulant que la stèle devait être érigée « dans le gymnase de Délos ». περίληψη Το γυμνάσιον που αναφέρεται στους απολογισμούς, τους καταλόγους απογραφής και τα ψηφίσματα που βρέθηκαν στη Δήλο, ταυτίζεται συνήθως με το γυμνάσιο που βρίσκεται κοντά στο Στάδιο, στο βορειοανατολικό τμήμα του νησιού. Το κτήριο αυτό, κτισμένο γύρω στο 100 π.Χ., δεν μπορεί να είναι το ίδιο με το γυμνάσιο που μαρτυρεί ται στις επιγραφές ήδη από τον 3ο αι. π.Χ. Το τελευταίο πρέπει να ταυτιστεί με την Παλαίστρα της λίμνης, όπου βρέθηκε, in situ, ένα ψήφισμα που αναφέρει ότι η στήλη έπρεπε να στηθεί "εν τώι γυμνασίωι τώι έν Δήλωι".

En août 1791, Fauvel se rendit à Délos à la demande du comte de Choiseul-Gouffier. Il était chargé d'y faire des dessins pour la seconde édition du Voyage pittoresque de la Grèce publié en 1782 et d'y prendre des marbres pour la... more
En août 1791, Fauvel se rendit à Délos à la demande du comte de Choiseul-Gouffier. Il était chargé d'y faire des dessins pour la seconde édition du Voyage pittoresque de la Grèce publié en 1782 et d'y prendre des marbres pour la collection du comte. Les observations qu'il fit alors dans l'île et les fouilles qu'il y entreprit sont restées inédites. Elles sont connues par la correspondance de Fauvel, par plusieurs notes et par des dessins, actuellement conservés à la Bibliothèque nationale de France et à la Bibliothèque Gennadios d'Athènes. Leur étude permet de connaître le travail du peintre et d'en mesurer l'originalité. Il s'est intéressé à une petite tholos, au Portique de Philippe, au Colosse des Naxiens et sa base, au Temple des Déliens, à la base aux boucliers macédoniens, aux chapiteaux à avant-trains de taureau et aux triglyphes à bucranes. À l'exception du premier, tous ces vestiges se trouvent représentés sur une aquarelle anonyme qui appartenait à H. M. Blackmer et qui a été récemment publiée. Il paraît vraisemblable de l'attribuer à Fauvel. Les papiers de Fauvel permettent aussi de reconstituer la collection des objets qui ont été pris à Délos et l'histoire de leur dispersion entre les musées de Paris, de Marseille et de Berlin.

Les fouilles extensives entreprises à Délos par l’École française d’Athènes à partir de 1873 ont déjà permis de mettre au jour dans la ville antique une centaine de maisons, plus de 300 lieux de production et de commerce, une quinzaine de monuments publics et une quarantaine de sanctuaires, auxquels s’ajoute une campagne dont les terrasses de culture sont exceptionnellement bien conservées. Le mobilier n’est pas moins abondant. La richesse des collections d’inscriptions, de céramiques et de sculptures est unique dans les Cyclades et se compare à celle des plus grandes cités et des plus grands sanctuaires du monde grec. La majeure partie de ces découvertes fut réalisée entre 1873 et 1913. Ce livre évoque ces quarante premières années de l’exploration de l’île à travers les documents graphiques et photographiques les plus marquants qui furent alors produits.
